Saltwater Rituals, founded by Dr. Ayana Moss—a queer, Black somatic therapist and grief educator—needed a brand identity as grounded, authentic, and revolutionary as her transformative work. Her offerings support womxn navigating grief, emotional transitions, and rebirth through somatic healing, embodied ritual, and ancestral wisdom.
project scope
Dr. Moss wanted Saltwater Rituals to embody sacred softness and authentic emotional intimacy without feeling clinical, overly precious, or commodified. The identity needed to honor her cultural and personal values deeply—reflecting profound respect for ancestral wisdom, radical softness, and the powerful intersection of grief, liberation, and embodied care.
The Challenge
Editorial yet candid. Textures of stone, smoke, linen, shadow, and water evoke lived-in altars and quiet, sacred pauses. No over-styling—every image invites introspection and emotional connection.
The intentionally imperfect wordmark and icon were created to symbolize reflection, sacred imperfection, and embodied ritual. The form of the icon subtly evokes an eye, breast, and ritual bowl, softly capturing the feminine essence of Dr. Moss’s practice.
We paired a timeless editorial serif with a grounded sans-serif font, balancing sophistication with warmth and readability—capturing the slow, human rhythm of the brand’s voice.
The palette for Saltwater Rituals grounds the brand in elemental tones: airy Bone White evokes breath and clarity; Salted Sand brings tactile warmth and softness; Charred Terracotta adds deep, earthy intimacy; and Obsidian anchors the identity with protective power.
The deliverables were thoughtfully designed to encourage reflection, emotional depth, and embodied ritual. Every element creates intimate invitations for slowing down and turning inward.
